This proposal was developed as part of the open tender competition initiated by the Royal Government of Bhutan as a part of for the renovation and preservation of Zhemgang Dzong. The design concept is rooted in the principles of heritage conservation, ensuring that the historic Utse remains preserved as the cultural and spiritual heart of the Dzong.
The proposed Zhemgang Dzong draws its inspiration from the enduring identity of Khengrig Namsum—the three historic regions of Upper Kheng (Chikhor), Middle Kheng (Nangkhor), and Lower Kheng (Tamachok). These three cultural landscapes form the foundation of the design concept, shaping the spatial organization, symbolism, and architectural expression of the Dzong.
At the heart of the proposal stands the existing Utse, carefully preserved as the spiritual, historical, and visual anchor of the entire complex. Around this cherished heritage structure, the Dzong unfolds as a harmonious composition representing the unity of Khengrig Namsum, bringing together administration, monastic life, and public functions within a single cultural institution.
The design celebrates the craftsmanship, traditions, and natural character of Zhemgang through the integration of local materials, Kheng-inspired architectural elements, bamboo craft motifs, and symbolic walls that narrate the story of Khengrig Namsum. Rather than replicating the past, the proposal seeks to preserve its essence—creating a Dzong that honors its heritage while responding to the aspirations of future generations.
As a tribute to the people of Kheng, this concept is more than a building; it is a living expression of identity, memory, and belonging—rooted in the legacy of the Utse and inspired by the spirit of Khengrig Namsum.
